Multilingual Students Use Their Voices for Local Art Project

Multilingual Students Use Their Voices for Local Art Project

by Sarah Valentin, Pine Tree Elementary Multilingual Learner Teacher and 2023 Avon Schools Teacher of the Year

Last week, a group of multilingual (ML) students and their families met me at Avon Town Hall. We recorded video for a special, interactive painting. (More on that below.) The kids said 'good morning' in their native languages. Even my own kids said it in English. I spoke about the growing diversity in Avon schools. The videographers will take back the footage and edit it all and put it together.

It was so much fun.

People who visit Hendricks Live! when it opens this spring will see the painting hanging inside. They will be able to scan a QR code to listen to the story of a CSX railroad worker and hear our Avon ML students saying good morning in their own languages. It's called a Sunrise Painting.

Thank you so much, Mrs. Valentin and students, for participating in such a cool project. We can't wait to see the video and hear your voices!
